One of the first steps towards writing your final dissertation is of course the dissertation proposal. Although it is not a requirement, the experience you gain from writing a dissertation outline is priceless. You will see just how valuable this know-how is when you have to write a grant proposal. Unfortunately, this step will take you a long time and some requirements may vary from one institution to the other. If you are looking for a comprehensive guideline, you are sure to find one at your university. Nonetheless, if you are interested in some tips on how to write a dissertation proposal, here you go.

Prepare your ideas

The truth is that any work implies some kind of preparation. This means that you have to start by putting down your ideas on a piece of paper. After having done this, you have to see whether they go together. What you have to remember is that the proposal is just as important as the dissertation itself, in other words that it is a serious undertaking. Do not trick yourself into thinking that once you sit down at your desk, you will start writing page after page. First, you need to get your ideas together. Armed with a general picture of the document, you can continue.

Writing the introduction

In the introduction, you will state your research question and, of course, you will have to provide some kind of background. In the introduction, you have to make very clear the issue that you are going to tackle on the research paper. You should focus on explaining why the topic that you have chosen is important. This means that you have to have strong arguments; otherwise, the committee will not be impressed.  In the beginning, it is worth looking over the literature. This way, it will be easier for you to move on to the next section.

Constructing the body

What you have to keep on mind is the fact that a dissertation proposal is not a mini-dissertation. To put it differently, you are not writing a thesis, but advancing an idea for one. What the body has to include is of course answers. Your research question is divided into multiple ones. The document should state what issue you are going to pursue and in which way you are planning to address it. Inevitably, you have to talk about methodology, namely what tools you are going to use. This includes data as well as questionnaires. When discussing your ideas, you should make sure to organise them into chapters and sections. This way, it will be easier for the members of the committee to follow what you are saying.

Draw a conclusion

The structure of the dissertation proposal has to be similar to that of an essay, which means that need a conclusion as well. In the conclusion, you have to restate what you have said in the beginning since it is a little bit early to talk about outcomes. Just summarise your findings and describe what you expect to accomplish.

If you do not have enough time on your hands, you can always hire someone to do the work for you.
